🇮🇹 Minimum Recommended Level of Italian

The official language of instruction at the University of Macerata is Italian.

  • The minimum recommended level of Italian to study as an Erasmus or Bilateral Agreement student is A1 (CEFR).

  • For internships in the field of Education, a minimum level of B1 is required.

📝 Italian Language Entry and Placement Tests

1. Entry Test A1 ERASMUS – COMPULSORY

  • Who must take it: All Erasmus students (and recommended for Extra-EU Bilateral Agreement students)

  • Purpose: To assess the minimum A1 level of Italian

  • Note: This is not a placement test for course level assignment

2. General Placement Test – for ALL International Students

  • Purpose: Determines the appropriate course level for Italian language courses

  • Who must take it: All international students, including Erasmus students who wish to attend an Italian language course, must take the test in order to be placed in the appropriate level

Registration Details

  • When:

    • First semester and full academic year: 30 April – 20 May
    • Second semester: 10 October – 30 October
  • How:

    1. Register via: http://CLAcourses.unimc.it/

    2. Take the test at: http://moodle.unimc.it using the information provided during the registration (email + password)

👩‍🏫 Internships in the Field of Education

Students nominated in the EDUCATION field who want to carry out an internship in Italian schools must:

  • Include the internship in their Learning Agreement

  • Have a minimum B1 level of Italian (CEFR)

  • Can earn up to 4 CFUs/ECTS per semester (max 8 CFUs for full-year students)

Internships are integrated into a personalized training path, ensuring high-quality and sustainable experiences.

How to Meet Language Requirements for Internships:

  1. Step 1: Take the compulsory Entry Test (A1 minimum required for studies)

  2. Step 2: Take the General Placement Test to demonstrate B1 level for internships

đź—Ł Italian Language Courses Offered

1. 50-Hour Intensive Course for Beginners (A0–A1)

Who should attend:

  • Students without a valid A1 certificate

  • Students who fail the Entry Test

Schedule – 2025-2026 Academic Year

  • First Semester: 15 Sept – 6 Oct 2025, Mon–Fri, 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM

  • Second Semester: 26 Jan – 20 Feb 2026, Mon–Fri, 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Attendance Requirement: 75% minimum (at least 38 hours)
Final Exam: Passing students earn 8 CFUs/ECTS

2. 40-Hour Courses of Italian (A2, B1, B2, C1 Levels)

Who can attend: Students who pass the Entry Test

  • Available in the first and second semesters

  • Requires a placement test to determine appropriate level

Important:

  • Students may take more than one course, but only one course (highest level passed) can be recognized for 8 CFUs/ECTS

  • Lower-level courses will appear as passed exams, but won’t carry credits or grades

🇬🇧 Minimum Recommended Level of English

Although the main teaching language is Italian, many departments offer courses or sections in English.

To attend courses taught in English:

  • Students must have minimum B1 level in English (CEFR)

  • Must provide a valid English language certificate, such as:

    • TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge exams

    • University-issued certificates confirming B1 level

📌 Certificates must be:

  • Dated after 1 January 2021

  • Submitted as an attachment with the online application form

Note: Even for courses in English, students must achieve at least A1 in Italian and follow the same Entry Test procedure.
