Residence Permits and Visas

Non-EU citizens

Before arrival

Non-EU students residing outside Italy must apply for a study visa (type D – “Exchange and mobility programme”) before travelling to Italy.

The procedure starts with the online pre-enrolment through the UniversItaly portal:
https://www.universitaly.it

Once your application is validated, you must apply for the visa at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence, following the instructions provided by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAECI):
https://vistoperitalia.esteri.it

The University of Macerata will provide an invitation letter in digital format, if required.

Important notes

  • Visa requirements may vary depending on the Embassy/Consulate → always check the official website of your local diplomatic authority

  • You must provide valid health insurance covering the entire stay (minimum €30,000, including emergency care, hospitalisation and repatriation)

  • Processing times can be long → apply as early as possible

  • Students already holding a valid EU residence permit may not need a visa → please verify directly with the relevant Italian Embassy/Consulate

Upon arrival

Non-EU students entering Italy with a visa must apply for a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) within 8 working days of arrival.

How to apply

  • Submit your application at a Post Office using the dedicated kit

  • Pay the required fee (approx. €100)

  • Attend the appointment at the local Immigration Office (Ufficio Immigrazione)

⏳ The issuance of the residence permit may take at least two months

Students entering Italy under a visa exemption must instead complete a declaration of presence (dichiarazione di presenza).

📌 A valid health insurance is required for all procedures.
